Hey Death, It's Time We Talk Session tiles for SxSW Sydney

Thanks for stopping by to keep building and flexing your real talk muscle.

Here are a collection of resources to expand on Danni and my SxSW Sydney, 2025, session – “Hey Death, It’s Time We Talk”.

Not only do conversations around death and dying invite us to build our muscles for the existential real shit.

They also compel us to tend to our lives with more reverence.

I appreciate you for spending some time leaning further into your mortality.

I’m excited about all the ways you can use that reality to inspire a more profound life.

With much love,

x Christina

“Things falling apart is a kind of testing and also a kind of healing. We think that the point is to pass the test or to overcome the problem, but the truth is that things don’t really get solved. They come together and they fall apart. Then they come together again and fall apart again. It’s just like that. The healing comes from letting there be room for all of this to happen: room for grief, for relief, for misery, for joy.”

Existential Reflections

Our time here is finite and unpredictable. That we will die is our only certainty. So with that in mind how you can start living with greater meaning, joy and courage starting now?

What do you value most and why?

Where are you spending your time, energy and money that doesn’t align to those values?

What can you spend your time, energy and money on instead?

What brings you the most joy in life?

How can you fill your days with more of those joy bringers?

What is something you’ve been putting off that you can take action on knowing our time isn’t a given?

What is something small but meaningful you can do today that will contribute to your patchwork legacy?

What is something you will regret not doing/trying, even if it doesn’t work out?

How to build a better support system.

Friends and Family

Not all of our friends and family will be resourced to be there to support us in all the ways we need. Some will have skills to be there for us in some ways but not others. This is okay. This is why we need to expand our support networks. Who is in your support team?

Your Support Team

  • Psychologist – provides therapy, coping strategies, and evidence-based support.
  • Counsellor – offers talk therapy, guidance, and a safe space to process emotions.
  • Psychiatrist – can diagnose and manage mental health conditions, prescribe medication if needed.
  • Social Worker – helps connect people with resources, services, and practical support.

Physical Health Support

  • General Practitioner (GP) – first point of contact for overall health, referrals, and care coordination.
  • Specialist doctors – depending on the issue (e.g., oncologist, neurologist, cardiologist).
  • Nurse or care coordinator – provides ongoing care, check-ins, and monitoring.
  • Complimentary health – other health providers who provide additional physical health and wellness (eg. Yoga, PT, naturopath)

Practical & Lifestyle Support

  • Financial counsellor/advisor – helps with money stress, budgeting, or navigating hardship services.
  • Legal advisor – if there are legal matters linked to their situation (e.g., family law, wills, employment issues).
  • Occupational therapist – helps with adapting daily life if illness, disability, or stress is making it hard to function.

Community & Spiritual Support

  • Peer support worker – someone with lived experience who offers understanding and encouragement.
  • Faith leader / spiritual advisor – if spirituality or religion is an important part of their coping.
  • Community support groups – spaces to connect with others going through similar experiences.

A Word From Dying to Know Day

Each year, over 185,000 Australians die, leaving more than 1.6 million people grieving (ABS, 2024). But grief reaches far beyond death. People experience deep loss through the death of a loved one or a cherished pet, the end of a meaningful relationship, financial instability, serious illness, or the loneliness that comes from losing connection and companionship. These experiences are part of life, yet grief is often misunderstood or dismissed.
Grief Literacy; the understanding of how grief affects us and how to support others, it can help build more compassionate communities. Whether in families, schools, workplaces, or neighbourhoods, fostering Grief Literacy allows us to move beyond silence and stigma. It empowers people to cope with loss, support one another, and create environments where grief is acknowledged and met with empathy, not isolation.
If grief becomes overwhelming and persistent the psychological side of community care is also our focus, our mental health services offer compassionate, professional support to help you navigate the healing journey.
